Orlando playgrounds take a beating. Wood mulch washes away in summer storms, sand gets into everything, and bare dirt turns to mud the moment it rains. Our playground turf installations give daycares, schools, churches, and HOAs a play surface that is padded for softer falls, drains fast, and stays clean and usable all year.
We build playground turf systems across the Orlando area — from daycares in Oviedo and Winter Springs to schools in Apopka and churches in St. Cloud. Every system includes impact-absorbing padding under the turf, because the surface kids fall on matters as much as how it looks.
What a Playground Turf System Includes
- Impact padding. A shock-absorbing pad under the turf softens falls. Pad thickness is matched to your equipment's fall height.
- Free-draining base. Rock base graded so storm water moves through fast — no puddles under the swings after a downpour.
- Playground-grade turf. Dense, durable turf that stands up to constant running, sliding, and play.
- Secure seams and edges. Seams are glued and anchored so little hands cannot peel them, and edges are locked down around the border.
- Clean infill. Rounded, non-abrasive infill that is comfortable for skin and will not scratch.
Why Orlando Playgrounds Switch
Softer falls. Padding under turf absorbs impact far better than packed dirt or thin, displaced mulch. Parents notice the difference immediately.
No mud, ever. Orlando's rainy season turns natural play areas into mud pits for months. Turf drains and kids can play the same afternoon a storm passes.
Nothing to replenish. Mulch washes out, compacts, and needs topping up constantly. Sand migrates everywhere. Turf stays put.
Cleaner kids and classrooms. No sand in shoes, no mulch chips tracked inside, no muddy handprints. Daycare staff love this part.
Fewer pests. Damp mulch harbors ants and other insects. Turf with good drainage gives them far less to work with.
How the Install Works, Step by Step
Step 1: Site review and measurements
We measure the play area, note equipment locations and fall heights, check drainage, and confirm access. You get a written quote.
Step 2: Tear-out and base
Old surfacing comes out. The rock base is installed, compacted, and graded for drainage.
Step 3: Padding installation
Impact pads are laid and joined across the fall zones, at the thickness your equipment requires.
Step 4: Turf and finishing
Turf goes over the padding, seams are secured, infill is worked in, and edges are locked to the border. Most playground installs take three to seven days.
What It Costs in Orlando
Playground turf systems with padding typically run $12 to $20 per square foot, installed. A 1,000-square-foot play area usually lands between $12,000 and $20,000. Pad thickness, tear-out of old surfacing, and drainage work move the price.
Honest note: every site is different — these are starting ranges. The written quote after our site review is the real number.
What a Bad Playground Install Looks Like
- No padding, or the wrong padding. Turf over bare dirt or thin foam is barely softer than the ground itself.
- Seams lifting. Kids find every weak seam. Poor glue work peels within months.
- Ponding in fall zones. Standing water under equipment is a slip and mosquito problem.
- Shifting pads. Pads that are not joined and anchored bunch up, creating trip ridges under the turf.
Keeping It Honest: The Downsides
Playground turf costs more than mulch upfront — the padding and labor are real. In direct sun it gets warm, so shade sails are worth considering for summer. And while daily upkeep is minimal, the surface still needs blowing off and occasional rinsing — leaves, spilled snacks, and sunscreen do not clean themselves.
What Parents and Directors Ask Us Most
Will it hurt less than mulch? Yes — consistently. Mulch works when it is fresh, deep, and evenly spread. In real playgrounds it migrates, compacts, and thins exactly where kids land. Padding under turf performs the same on day one thousand as day one.
What about splinters and debris? Gone. No wood chips in shoes, no hidden trash in the mulch, no sand in everything. Staff spend less time policing the surface and more time with the kids.
Can kids play right after rain? This is the big one in Orlando. A mulched playground can stay soggy for a day or more after a storm. Turf drains in minutes. Recess does not get cancelled for puddles.
Shade, Heat, and Summer Use
Let us be direct: an unshaded playground surface in Orlando in July is hot, turf or not. The smartest playground projects pair turf with shade sails over the equipment and rest areas. Shade drops the surface temperature dramatically and protects kids from UV at the same time.
Plan the shade with the turf, not after. Sail posts need footings, and it is far cheaper to set them during the turf install than to cut into a finished surface later. We can coordinate both so the playground is genuinely usable at noon in August — which is when kids want it most.
Comparing Playground Quotes
Playground quotes vary wildly, and the cheapest is rarely the safest. When you compare bids, line up these items side by side: the padding type and thickness (and what fall height it is rated for), the turf product name (not just "playground turf"), the base depth and compaction method, the seam and edge anchoring method, and the drainage plan. A quote that is thousands less usually skipped the padding, the base, or both — and you will feel the difference the first time a child falls. Ask every bidder the same questions and the real value becomes obvious.
